In 1861, the community sought to establish a post office but was rejected due to another post office named Brownsville already operating in York County. It was subsequently renamed Schomberg in 1862, a name suggested by Thomas Roberts Ferguson. The community was named after The 3rd Duke of Schomberg and the 1st Duke of Leinster, a general under King William III of England.
